Scripture Scribbles: November 2, 2025 - All Souls
the Gospel
John 6:37-40
Jesus said to the crowds:
“Everything that the Father gives me will come to me,
and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,
because I came down from heaven not to do my own will
but the will of the one who sent me.
And this is the will of the one who sent me,
that I should not lose anything of what he gave me,
but that I should raise it on the last day.
For this is the will of my Father,
that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him
may have eternal life,
and I shall raise him on the last day.”
the scribble
“Come Holy Spirit”
These are the words I whisper inside my head as I sit in the most peaceful adoration Chapel, hoping to write a reflection on today’s Gospel. I want the words to come from the Spirit, I want the Spirit to guide me. The desire I feel is to write about Joy…to write about the beautiful fruits of the Holy Spirit. How Paul lists them in Galatians 5:22-23 “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
I want to feel the abundance of these fruits bubbling up in my heart. Spilling over my cup so they are just pouring out into the lives of everyone I encounter.
I do desire this, but the reality is, I need help getting there. I need to depend on the Maker of heaven and earth. I need to rely on the architect of my very human heart. I need Him to show me how to share the fruits of the Spirit, even when it’s hard. Even when the people around us might be sad, really sad, angry, frustrated, feeling the weight of the world’s difficulties on their shoulders.
How then does all this good fruit spill into their laps?
How then do we understand God's will?
The clearest line to me in this Gospel is, “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day.”
That’s where our hope needs to be. In eternity. Spending eternity with the Father. Not only seeing his Son but believing in Him. Knowing his teachings, his promises, and his warnings. Trusting that He came so that we would have life and have it abundantly.
On this, All Souls’ Day, let’s look back towards those that have run their race before us, who have fought the good fight. Let’s pray for those we have lost, and let’s trust that their prayers will be prayed for us as we continue in our own race, our own adventure that we are living out, here on earth. Hopefully one day we will join them in the Heavenly Kingdom. I hope we can show up with our overflowing fruit baskets and our faces will be radiant with the Joy of the Lord.
