Scripture Scribbles: May 24, 2026 - Pentecost Sunday

the Gospel

John 20:19-23

On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, "Peace be with you."
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you."
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
"Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained."

the scribble

As I waited for my brother in the confession line, soft background music began to play — The Summons (“Will You Come and Follow Me”). My mind drifted through the lyrics, each line echoing a call to radical discipleship:

“Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?

Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same?

Will you let my love be shown?

Will you let my name be known?

Will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?”

Tears welled in my eyes as I listened. These were not just beautiful words; they were Christ’s questions, spoken directly to my heart:

“Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?

Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?

Will you risk the hostile stare?

Should your life attract or scare?

Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?”

The weight of that call felt overwhelming. Could I really say yes to it all? Another truth surfaced gently within me:

“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

We are all sent, each entrusted with a mission. It is not meant to be lived all at once. God does not ask for everything in a single moment. He simply asks for the next yes.

One step. One act of trust. One quiet surrender at a time.

And when live this way, the call becomes not daunting, but possible.
